It goes without saying that Hollywood has the highest standards when it comes to productions and performances. Not only do they put a lot of thought and creativity into it, but they also spend a great deal of investment money to make sure each detail is perfect. With that logic, it’s only natural that we expect the best of the best performances from the artists in Hollywood. Because of this, several Hollywood artists have now employed the help of lip-syncing, especially during live performances. While many fans think it’s okay to use some degree of backup while performing, several are still very hesitant. Thus, when these lip-synced performances fail, you best believe it’s about to go down in history. Want to know which lip-sync failures made it on top of our historic list? Then keep reading.

BEYONCE – 2013 PRESIDENTIAL INAUGURATION

Queen Beyonce has proven time and time again that when it comes to performing live, she needs little to zero help. When she did decide to enlist the help of a backup track, however, she chose to use it at the 2013 Presidential Inauguration. What happened next is surely not one of Beyonce’s finest moments. The singer admitted that she was indeed lip-syncing the American national anthem but added that she only did so because she did not have time to rehearse with the orchestra. We totally get where Queen B is coming from, and we sure do give her credit for only wanting the best for that historic moment.

BRITNEY SPEARS – 2014 PLANET HOLLYWOOD

It’s a well-known fact that Britney Spears’ performances always have some degree of lip-syncing. Both her fans and her critics have long accepted that fact. However, Britney left her supporters disappointed after she lip-synced Sia’s version of her song Perfume during her Planet Hollywood residency performance. Critics were also quick to jump on the situation and said that she should have at least given Sia some proper credit. Luckily, Britney learned from that incident and continued to put her best foot forward.

MICHAEL JACKSON – 1983 MOTOWN 25

No matter what generation you belong to, I guess we can all agree that Michael Jackson is one of the most iconic performers to have ever emerged from Hollywood. The music industry itself would not be what it is today without the contributions that are given credit to the one and only King of Pop. However, even Michael Jackson himself lip-synced his way through a performance during the 1983 Motown Anniversary Concert. Although he was able to distract the crowd with the debut of his iconic moonwalk, he still was not able to conceal the fact that he was only miming the lyrics to his smash hit Thriller.

ASHLEE SIMPSON – 2004 SNL

When you are a young and emerging artist, there is probably nothing more terrifying than getting caught in a performance blunder in a show as big as Saturday Night Live. Ashlee Simpson knows this well enough after suffering through the exact situation in 2004 SNL performance. It soon became a career-defining incident, with many people only remembering her for that exact moment. What’s worse, however, is instead of taking credit for the mishap, she tried to blame it on her band. Yikes!

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK – 1992

People nowadays may be more forgiving towards artists who choose to lip-sync, but fans from the ‘90s did not take the issue very lightly. New Kids on the Block even had to book an emergency performance in 1992 after a fan filed a lawsuit against the band for simply lip-syncing. Now, we’re not sure if that’s enough reason to call on the help of lawyers, but it does give us some idea how seriously fans took music performances back then.

MARIAH CAREY – 2016 DICK CLARK’S NEW YEAR’S ROCKIN EVE

Mariah Carey’s strong vocals and out-of-this-world high notes have always been the front and center of her career. However, decades of belting out ballads seemed to have taken a toll on Mariah as the singing powerhouse has now resulted in lip-syncing her tracks.  She may be a little more discreet about it now, but her 2016 performance at Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rocking Eve definitely caught fans off-guard after she lip-synced her way through a pre-recorded sound of her iconic whistle. She did take credit for the lip-sync fail, but we have to say, it sure was not one of her finest moments.
