If there is one thing we’re all guilty of, it’s romanticizing the lives of celebrities. With all the glitz, the glamour, the perks, and of course, the money, it’s not hard to think that they are nowhere near like us. We know it’s easy to put them up the pedestal of perfection and invincibility, but what most of us tend to forget is that these celebrities are every bit as human as the rest of us. Although there is some degree of truth to these assumptions, these Hollywood stars are still not exempt from the brutal and unforgiving cycle that is life. Here are some of the brightest stars with the deepest darkest pasts we have ever heard.

DREW BARRYMORE

With her charming smile and endearing personality, it’s hard to imagine Drew Barrymore being anything less than happy. However, this child star turned Hollywood vixen fell on a downward spiral very early in her career. At only nine years old, Drew got exposed to unhealthy vices, and without proper adult supervision, her habits got worse and worse. By the age of thirteen, Drew started to seek professional intervention and got her life back on track at fifteen years old. It was not an easy path to walk on, and she deserves so much credit for having the courage to turn her life around.

ASHTON KUTCHER

We all know Ashton Kutcher as a charming, funny, and unproblematic man. However, behind his dashing looks and mesmerizing smile lies a tragic story of love and loss. Long before he became husband to Mila Kunis, Ashton was head-over-heels in love with Ashley Ellerin. However, their time together was cut short after a man named Michael Thomas Gargiulo took Ashley’s life on February 21, 2001. The couple was supposed to go to the Grammy’s after-party that night but decided not to. Sources say that Ashton felt a massive degree of guilt for what happened that he will forever take with him.

ROBERT DOWNEY JR.

Rober Downey Jr. is, without a doubt, one of the most iconic actors of this generation. Thanks to his legendary performance as the heroic Iron Man, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been transformed into the Hollywood powerhouse it is today. However, years before landing the iconic superhero role, Robert was struggling to keep his life on track because of his constant trip to treatment facilities. Because his image wasn’t quite sparkly, Marvel executives had to think long and hard before deciding to take the risk on RDJ. Thankfully, Robert was able to pull through his hard times and emerge as one of the most successful actors in history. Now, he has one of the most impressive acting credits portfolios in the industry.

KEUNU REEVES

Thanks to his dashing good looks and humble personality, Keanu Reeves was able to win the hearts of millions all over the globe. There is, however, one other aspect about the actor that captured everyone’s attention — his tragic past. The actor grew up without a father and had to move around with his mother. Because of the poverty he experienced as a child and as a teen, Keanu could not pursue his studies or finish a degree. Still, the young Keanu persevered and was able to break into the field of entertainment. After a few years, however, he encountered another series of loss starting with his best friend, River Phoenix. A few years later, Keanu and his girlfriend lost their baby, then only a year after that, his girlfriend also passed. He went through something most of us can’t even begin to imagine, but we’re glad that he has found love again.

OPRAH WINFREY

Oprah Winfrey may be one of the most influential personalities in the industry today, but the legendary host’s life wasn’t always sunshine and daisies. In an interview with Huffington Post, Oprah explained that she had to sleep out on the porch during her childhood years because her mother was not making enough money to provide them with a more suitable shelter. She also had to go through a series of abuse, which left her scarred and traumatized for a very long time. However, thanks to her hard work and the guidance of her financial advisors, Oprah managed to amass a massive fortune, securing her and her family’s welfare forever.

KELSEY GRAMMER

Thanks to his incredible performance as Dr. Frasier Crane in the sitcom Cheers and Frasier, Kelsey Grammer is now one of the most beloved actors in the entire industry. However, his life before fame was nothing like the comedy episodes he brought to life on-screen. Instead, his life was like a real-life drama that unraveled several devastating losses. First, he lost his grandfather to a heart attack, followed by the passing of his father due to a house fire. Then in 1975, his sister tragically passed when a man named Freddie Glenn broke into her home. His suffering did not end there. Five years after the traumatizing passing of her sister, Kelsey, again, lost two of his brothers in a scuba diving accident. The degree of grief and trauma all became too much for the actor, and he succumbs to his vices. Fortunately, he was able to pull through and continue with his career.
